Econometric Models of Asymmetric Ascending Auctions∗

چکیده
We develop econometric models of ascending (English) auctions which allow for both bidder asymmetries as well as common and/or private value components in bidders’ underlying valuations. We show that the equilibrium inverse bid functions in each round of the auction are implicitly defined (pointwise) by a system of nonlinear equations, so that conditions for the existence and uniqueness of an increasing-strategy equilibrium are essentially identical to those which ensure a unique and increasing solution to the system of equations. We exploit the computational tractability of this characterization in order to develop an econometric model, thus extending the literature on structural estimation of auction models. Finally, an empirical example illustrates how equilibrium learning affects bidding during the course of the auction. JEL: C51,D44, D82, L96

Econometric Models of Ascending Auctions
We develop general econometric models of ascending (English) auctions which allow for both bidder asymmetries as well as common and/or private value components in bidders' underlying valuations. We show that the equilibrium inverse bid functions in each round of the auction are implicitly deened (pointwise) by a system of nonlinear equations, so that conditions for the existence and uniqueness ...
متن کاملNonparametric Approaches to Auctions∗
This chapter discusses structural econometric approaches to auctions. Remarkably, much of what can be learned from auction data can be learned without restrictions beyond those derived from the relevant economic model. This enables us to take a nonparametric perspective in discussing how the structure of auction models can be combined with observables to uncover (or test hypotheses about) primi...
متن کاملIncreasing Competition and the Winner’s Curse: Evidence from Procurement
We assess empirically the effects of the winner’s curse which, in common-value auctions, counsels more conservative bidding as the number of competitors increases. First, we construct an econometric model of an auction in which bidders’ preferences have both commonand private-value components, and propose a new monotone quantile approach which facilitates estimation of this model. Second, we es...

Econometric Analysis of Cattle Auctions by Christine Zulehner This paper provides an empirical analysis of cattle auctions taking place in Amstetten, Austria. The particular auctions we focus on are ascending or English auctions. In this market the sellers are usually farmers and the buyers are either farmers as well or resale trade firms. A further characteristic of this market are two large b...
متن کاملStructural Econometric Modeling: Rationales and Examples from Industrial Organization
This chapter explains the logic of structural econometric models and compares them to other types of econometric models. We provide a framework researchers can use to develop and evaluate structural econometric models. This framework pays particular attention to describing different sources of unobservables in structural models. We use our framework to evaluate several literatures in industrial...
